A Journey Through Time: The Story of the Galette des Rois

The Galette des Rois that we proudly present is not only a dessert, but also a witness to history. The origins of this French pastry date back to Roman times, when it was part of the celebration of the winter solstice. Over time, this cake became an essential part of the celebration of Epiphany, or the Epiphany, commemorating the arrival of the Three Kings to the Infant Jesus.

According to tradition, this cake had a hidden bean inside, which was a symbol of fertility and the anticipation of spring. The person who found the bean was named "king for a day", which was associated with a reversal of social roles - for that one day, slaves could become lords, and ordinary people - kings. This tradition was known as the "King of the Beans".

In the 19th century, the traditional beans in cakes were replaced with porcelain figurines, often depicting figures from the Nativity scene. This change not only added charm to the custom but also became an expression of the social and cultural changes of the time.

The Galette des Rois has also had its share of controversy. In the 16th century, a rivalry broke out in Paris between bakeries and pastry shops for the right to bake and sell the pastry. Ultimately, the pastry shops were given the right to bake the round brioche, known as the "Gateau des Rois", while the bakeries began to produce what we know today as the Galette des Rois.

Thanks to this, Galette des Rois has become a symbol not only of tradition but also of the evolution of French culture, preserving its roots while adapting to changing times and tastes. Our cake is a tribute to this rich and colourful history, bringing joy and tradition to family tables for centuries.

Galette des Rois – A taste that connects generations

Our Galette des Rois is a combination of buttery, flaky puff pastry with a velvety almond filling. In each piece you will find a harmony of flavors and aromas that will transport you to the picturesque streets of Paris. Tradition dictates that the youngest member of the family indicates who will receive which piece of cake, guaranteeing the randomness of finding a hidden surprise.

Family ritual

During the division of the cake, the youngest in the family covers their eyes while the adult cuts the cake into equal pieces. Then the youngest decides who gets which piece. It is an old custom that adds charm to the whole experience. The person who finds the porcelain figurine can proudly wear the emblem of royal power – the crown attached to the cake, and is assured of prosperity for the whole year.

Invitation to the table

We invite you to experience this unique tradition. Let this New Year begin with a magical taste that combines history, tradition and unforgettable culinary experiences. Orders for Galette des Rois in our online store can be placed until January 5.
